** The Charlotte Post Foundation will honor Charlotte architect and former mayor Harvey Gantt with its Luminary Lifetime Achievement award at the Charlotte Post Best banquet on Saturday, September 22. In 2007-2008, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools expects to have 25,360 students in portable classrooms. If all of those students were in elementary school, thats close to 30 elementary schools.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools had 1,139 portables in use during the 2006-2007 school year.
Of those, 170 are more than 40 years old they were purchased between 1963 and 1966. Another 48 were bought in 1969 and 1970.
This is extensive use of temporary facilities.
